How to Reduce Computer Eye Strain

Updated on August 28, 2010  |  Posted In Computers,Health

Computer Eye StrainEver get a headache and irritated eyes after working on your computer? You are not alone. According to the American Optometric Association,Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is occuring in about 70% of moderate to frequent computer users.

Staring at a computer or other digital device for two hours or more without using measures to prevent eye strain, can put you at risk for CVS. This growing problem is a new condition of the electronic age, where people of all ages are inundated by variations of screen technology. From TV sets and computer monitors to handheld devices–they are nearly everywhere we go.

The headaches, eye strain, fatigue, and irritated eyes are even more common for those who wear optical aids, such as contacts or glasses. Additionally, this 71% of CVS sufferers also complain of back, neck, and eye pain more often. Although you cannot change your genetic propensity for poor eyesight, you can at least reduce eye strain’s role in its development. Avoiding overuse of these items seems like the obvious answer, but modern life and work often make it unavoidable.

Paying attention to four areas can make a big difference in your health:

1. Computer Screen Placement: If your computer screen is equal to or above eye level, this could be causing unnecessary eye strain. The best placement for eye health and comfort, puts the center of the screen four or five inches below eye level and 20 to 28 inches away from your face.

2. Lighting and Glare Reduction: A light source shining on your screen will cause eye strain because of the the glare. A carefully placed directional lamp that shines on the desk surface instead of the device will provide adequate light and keep reflections at a minimum.

3. Take a 20 Second Break: In order to rest your eyes and reduce the occurrence of eye strain, there is a simple 20/20/20 rule to remember. Every 20 minutes, look at an object at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds to allow your eyes to refocus.

4. Remember to Blink: Blinking is necessary to moisten your eyes and keep irritation at bay. When people stare at a screen, they tend to blink far less than usual, which can lead to “dry eye.”

Most people when asked attribute the creative boost to the change and variety of scenery. While it sounds good and actually makes sense the research clearly shows it is the exercise itself that creates the boost.

In a recent Newsweek magazine article on current research on exercise-related creativity they wrote the following:

Almost every dimension of cognition improves from 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, and creativity is no exception. The type of exercise doesn’t matter, and the boost lasts for at least two hours afterward. However, there’s a catch: this is the case only for the physically fit. For those who rarely exercise, the fatigue from aerobic activity counteracts the short-term benefits.

If you would like to learn more about the creative aspect of exercise follow the this link. As incentive did you know asking someone to be creative is a sure fire way to kill their creative juices. However, altering your strategy by just asking them them to show you how they would solve the problem doubles their creative output.

Updated on July 28, 2010  |  Posted In Social Media

FacebookWell it’s time to peek into the corners and back alleys of Facebook. The company is beginning to roll out Facebook Questions, a Q&A service that lets users poll all of Facebook, oh boy! Facebook has been sending out a few private invites to members for a while now with plans for a broader general population rollout later.

There has been a lot of buzz about the results, especially since they will be syndicated to the search engines.

You’ll be able to ask a question from a couple of places – the Questions tab in Facebook’s left navigation area, the publisher that appears at the top of the page, and curiously, the search box.

If you’re thinking this new capability could be a pretty big deal, you would be right. Given it’s 500 million users it won’t be long until Facebook gathers a truck load of data which could present a direct challenge to Google for a lot of queries. The boys and girls at Goolge would be wise to sit up and take note of this new Facebook development because it will in a very short time provide a reliable alternative to Google.
