A recent report from the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition indicates spice peppers could be effective in helping people lose weight. Apparently the capsaicin compound found in peppers helps burn calories.
Researchers indicate capsaicin burns calories by using energy to raise a person’s body temperature which has the same effect exercising.
Capsaicin is indeed spicy, which is why many people either did not like it or were not be able to tolerate the hot sensation. However, some chili peppers have a form of capsaicin called dihydrocapsiate, or DCT, that is milder and easier on the digestive system.
34 people who were trying to lose weight were observed. Some were given DCT pills with their meals and others placebos. Those who took the DCT pills expended much more energy than those who took the placebo.
The study showed that those who took the DCT burned almost twice as much energy.
Bottom Line: Researchers suggest people wnating to lose weight would be better off eating peppers rather using DCT supplements.
